In just two weeks, the Bowers will present Guo Pei: Couture Beyond. I think that for many, you will find this to be a very different and exciting exhibition. As usual, our master of exhibition design, Paul Johnson, is pulling out all of the stops for this exhibition of over 40 visually stunning haute couture gowns.
If you don’t know who Guo Pei is, just recall the yellow dress that Rihanna wore to the Met Gala a few years ago which ended up on the cover of Vogue. That gown launched Guo Pei into international fame and led to her being ranked as China’s leading fashion designer.
The exhibition opening begins with our annual Gala on Thursday, March 7 and is closely followed on March 8 with our Fellows and Members openings. Lilah Ramzi, Features Editor of Vogue, will give both Fellows and Members a presentation before we open the exhibition up for preview. On March 9, the first day that the exhibition is open to the public, Guo Pei and President of SCAD, Paula Wallace, will host a presentation in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium. Please mark your calendars now, since seating in the auditorium is limited to 300 and we don’t want to disappoint anyone. The exhibition will continue until July 14 when we will close with another amazing speaker. Until then, Emily Mahon from our Education Department has put together a full schedule of exhibition-related programs and events.
For those who aren’t necessarily into fashion, I think you will find the next year has something for everyone from a major exhibition of the Mexican Master, Tamayo, to watercolors from the recently acquired Anne Cullen collection bequest, to Quest for the Nile, an amazing story that we are producing from the collections of the Royal Geographic Society in London. As you can tell, the Bowers is continuing to strive to bring you the very best in world art and culture. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events.
